The Law Society of Ireland is the educational, representative and regulatory body for the 12,000 solicitors in Ireland. It exercises statutory functions under the Solicitors Acts 1954 to 2008 in relation to the education, admission, enrolment, discipline and regulation of the solicitors’ profession.

The rules governing solicitors in Ireland are contained in a number of sources including the Solicitors Acts (for example, the Solicitors Act 1954, the Solicitors (Amendment) Act 1960 and the Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2008), statutory instruments (for example The Solicitors Acts 1954 to 2008 (Practising Certificate 2009) Regulations 2008 and the Solicitors (Continuing Professional Development) Regulations 2007) and the rules or principles of good conduct.
