Introduction to ILEX Code of Conduct

All ILEX members are governed by the ILEX Code of Conduct which requires, inter alia, that members:

  • Behave professionally
  • Observe the same standards as solicitors
  • Ensure clients receive the same support and quality of service as a solicitor provides.

What does ILEX Code of Conduct contain?

The Code of Conduct itself provides, inter alia, that members will:

  • avoid bringing the Institute or its members into disrepute
  • avoid their professional integrity being questioned
  • put the interests of clients first, except where this conflicts with their duty to the Court
  • not misuse trust placed in them or breach confidences
  • not use information gained to personal advantage
  • not hold themselves out to be a Felloe of the Institute if they are not
  • not discriminate against anyone unfairly
  • at all timeswork within the framework of the law.

The Code is supported by a number of other guides to assist members of the Institute to comply with their obligations. These include:

  • Other Complaints Procedures

In the event that an ILEX member breaches the Code, then he or she will be investigated in accordance with the ILEX complaint handling rules and in the event that it is decided that the member is guilty of conduct which is unbefitting a member then a he or she may be excluded or suspended from membership or may be fined, reprimanded or admonished. Additionally he or she may be order to pay compensation or the costs of any investigation.
