The Isle of Man Law Society is the educational, representative and regulatory body of the Manx Bar and works to improve access to the law generally and provide representation, services and support for members, and to deal with complaints from the public about members of the profession.
The Law Society of Ireland is the educational, representative and regulatory body for the 12,000 solicitors in Ireland. It exercises statutory functions under the Solicitors Acts 1954 to 2008 in relation to the education, admission, enrolment, discipline and regulation of the solicitors’ profession.
The Law Society of Northern Ireland acts as the regulatory authority for solicitors in Northern Ireland with responsibility for education, accounts, discipline, and professional conduct.
Qualification as a notary is regulated by the Faculty Office of the Archbishop of Canterbury under the direction of the Master of the Faculties and its day to day administration is the responsibility of the Registrar.
Licensed conveyancers are subject to a number of different rules, the principal of which is the Licensed Conveyancers Conduct Rules 2009.
Under the Legal Services Act 2007, the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys (CIPA) and the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys (ITMA) were designated as approved regulators. In order to separate their regulatory functions from their representational functions, as the Act requires them to do, each set up a Regulation Board namely, the Patent Attorney Regulation Board, and the Trade Mark Attorney Regulation Board.
ILEX Professional Standards Limited (IPS) is the Legal Executives regulatory body and was created in October 2008 to ensure that ILEX complies with its responsibilities as an approved regulator of lawyers under the Legal Services Act 2007.
ILEX members are governed by the ILEX Code of Conduct, breach of which will be investigated on accordance with the ILEX complaint handling rules and whihc could result in exclusion or suspension from membership.
All members of the Insolvency Practitioners Association are required to act in accordance with its Ethics Code for Members and to comply with Statements of Insolvency Practice, take account of Guidance issued by the Association and take note of ?Dear IP? Bulletins issued by the Insolvency Service.
The Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner’s Code of Standards (the OISC Code) applies to everyone providing immigration advice or immigration services within the UK and is made in accordance with paragraph 3 of Schedule 5 to the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
Firms carrying out financial services business must either be regulated directly by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) or come within the exemptions for those who are members of certain professional bodies and be regulated by their own regulator. Any firm intending to be authorised directly by the FSA will be subject to the provisions set out in the FSA Handbook.
All ILEX members are governed by the ILEX Code of Conduct which requires, inter alia, that members behave professionally, observe the same standards as solicitors and ensure clients receive the same support and quality of service as a solicitor provides.
One of the responsibilities of the Bar Standards Board is to maintain the Code of Conduct of the Bar of England and Wales, which provides the rules which all barrister?s must obey. This is currently in its 8th Edition.
